This might explain why I had to call Billy at work on Thursday morning (yes that would October 30th) and remind him that he had to come home at a reasonable time so we could carve a pumpkin with Jack. That's right - we completely forgot. Billy dutifully left whatever pressing issue had arisen in his case from hell and came home to unleash some of his frustration on a poor helpless orange gourd. When asked what kind of pumpkin he would like daddy to carve, Jack answered "naughty."
Not knowing what exactly constituted a naughty pumpkin was a little bit of a problem but that didn't stop Billy. Within 3 minutes, he hacked this poor pumpkin to death.
Jack couldn't have been more pleased with his creation...
Halloween day started with "Trunk or Treating" at Jack's school, a great event that the parents seem to enjoy as much as the kids. Jack had never been trick or treating before but he managed to get the hang of it pretty quickly. Also, he insisted that he trick or treat only with Lulu, not mommy.
He also discovered lollipops which prevented him from smiling in any picture taken that morning. Here he is with Charlie the fireman and Sabrina the cowgirl sucking down sugar on a stick...
Having had a good nap, Jack prepared to do battle all over again that evening.
Our neighborhood is full of young families. Our particular 2 block radius was one huge block party. Adults had set up tables of food and adult beverages next to bowls of candy. Kids were everywhere - it was great. Auntie Beth joined us as well. I was really surprised but Jack had a blast and was a total pro, walking right up to someone, saying "trick or treat," then "thank you" and then "happy halloween."
Everyone seemed to get such a kick out of him they kept trying to give him more pieces of candy. C'mon people - the kid isn't even 2 yet. Do you really think he needs another snickers bar?
The thing that cracked me up was that, having had no candy prior to this evening, he clearly understood that there was some kind of candy hierarchy. He would very carefully look at the bowl of candy in front of him, paw around for a minute and then come up with his prize which he immediately stuffed in his own pumpkin, lest the owner have a last minute change of heart and try to take it back.
After trick or treating we came home to hand out candy. Jack was happy to oblige but he kept his own pumpkin close by just in case one of those grubby little hands tried to steal from him...
