November Nor'easter

We live in a low-lying coastal area.  There is water virtually everywhere, one of the best things about this region.  But the downside is that minor changes in the weather often cause flooding and our neighborhood is particularly affected by tidal changes.  Our cross streets (we live in the middle of the block) flood when it rains a normal amount so you can imagine what happens when there is a nor'easter.

Our first nor'easter occurred when I was about 7 months pregnant with Jack.  We were due in Richmond for a baby shower hosted by my mother-in-law and in order to get out to the street where we had parked our car, we had to crawl over the wrought iron fence into our back neighbors' yard.  In the pouring rain.  With a dog.  And luggage.  7 months pregnant.  Not one of my finer moments.

This year, we had one of those "once in a lifetime" storms.  And it wasn't just our cross streets that flooded.  Our street looked like a rolling river.

As you can see, the houses are up on slight hills but the street and the sidewalks are completely underwater.  And if you look closely, you can see the street sign at the end of the block is almost completely submerged.

We had a kayaker and a paddleboarder come down our street.  Our house is elevated so fortunately we didn't have any flood damage but it was a wild scene.  Jack was totally confounded.  He kept asking why there was a river in front of our house.

And then he realized that life was, for all intents and purposes, one big puddle - his for the jumping.  For a three year old boy, that's pretty much nirvana.
